Yesterday I stopped by the panaderia to buy some bread. The nice folks there didn’t have change for the $50 peso bill I had so told me to pay tomorrow. Try that at Safeway or Chedraui.
Conversely, when I took a roll of film to DaVinci Photo for development the other day they were short $5 pesos of change so I told them they could make it up to me next time.
Another advantage of dealing with familiar small businesspersons.

I really dont think it has anything at all to do with Safeway but more to do with relationships developed over a period of time. In your case trusting you is very evident.
I got drunk in a bar in Cabo and left a $400 Digital Camera at the bar, woke up at 4:30am and took a cab to the bar. The only persons available at that time were the dish and kitchen washers. After explaining what I had lost, one young man came back with my camera.
Unfortunately we have been raised on the media of America....do I have to continue?
My impression is that, generally speaking, folks in Mexico are more honest than those in the USA.
Likewise, other places. Traveling in Croatia I could leave my bag on the ferry dock, go have lunch, and return to find my bag right where I left it. And when boarding the ferry everyone placed there bags in a designated location on the lower deck and went above to find a seat.
Your story reminds me that I had a salad at a take away place here in Sydney a couple of weeks ago, I had no cash and the very kind owner said I could come back the next day... which I completely forgot to do (I rarely eat out and don't walk past this place on my way to work, so nothing reminded me of it). He's got my business card but didn't ring me to complain. I must go back this week!!!
